The School Council is made up of two children from each year group in the school, from Year 1 to Year 6. In September all children are invited to give a speech to their year group, stating why they wish to be a member of the School Council. This is followed by an election. Later in the year the children from the Foundation Stage elect their own council and meet with the main School Council, giving them a taste of things to come.
The Council meets every month. The staff representative helps run the meetings and the children elect a Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. They discuss many areas of interest to the children from the state of the toilets to playground behaviour and equipment. It has proved to be a valuable learning experience for the children, giving them a sense of responsibility as well as providing excellent feedback to the staff and governors. Each class also has a Class Council made up of four or five children from the class who are elected and who discuss issues and ideas raised by the class over the terms.
