Headteacher's update

It has been a short and yet very busy second half of the Spring Term with many whole school highlights including: World Book Day, our James Carter Whole School Poetry Day, Comic Relief – 'Red to toe!' and some wonderful workshops across the school as part of Henley Youth Festival. It has been great to see the children embracing these extra-curricular opportunities to inspire their love of learning.

As part of our school vision at Trinity, we encourage our pupils to 'shine in service' to the community and this term has seen so many examples of this being lived out. Miss Galton was amazed by the number of entries in a local bird drawing competition which Eliot (Year 6) won for Key Stage 2.

Trinity also really shone with our engagement in the numerous activities and opportunities during The Henley Youth Festival. We had multiple winners and runners-up in the Art Competition and so many wonderful entries in the Poetry Performance at The Kenton Theatre.

We also won the greatest number of participants (in relation to school size) for the Henley Youth Festival Fun Run - winning £250 to spend at school! I also wanted to say a huge well done to Leo (Year 6) who, as part of his Gold Mayor of Henley Award, walked 15 km (Henley-Marlow) by himself in February to raise money for people living with MORC2-related disorder, which is a rare genetic disease. This was a huge challenge to undertake and everyone is incredibly proud of him.

Last week was a busy and successful week for parents joining us in school for our Parent Information Sessions on 'Growth Mindset', 'SATS Preparation' and 'Supporting Reading in Early Years and KS1' and two 'Stay and Play' session in Early Years. Thank you to those who attended; we hope you found them useful.

Finally, we have been delighted to relaunch our Trinity Instagram page this term -@trinityprimaryschoolhenley as a way of sharing special moments of school life and showcasing to potential new families what life is like at Trinity. Please take a moment to find our new page and have a look at photos of World Book Day, the circus skills workshop for KS1 and some lovely outdoor learning in the sunshine last week.

We have much to look forward to in the Summer Term and I hope everyone has a very enjoyable and restful Easter break.

Early Years (Reception)

This half-term in EYFS, the children have been enjoying exploring a range of traditional stories and fairy tales. Through shared reading and storytelling, they have been learning to re-tell familiar tales and talk about the characters and settings. The children have also taken part in a variety of creative activities linked to these stories, including role-play, small world play and creating paintings inspired by different fairy tale scenes and characters.

Enrichment experiences

We have also had some exciting enrichment experiences this half-term. The children took part in a special owl workshop where they learnt about birds of prey and had the opportunity to see some owls up close. They have also been enjoying their Forest School sessions, where they have been exploring the natural world, developing their curiosity and learning through outdoor play and discovery.

Maths

In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of numbers to 10. The children have been exploring number bonds and practising finding one more and one less than a given number. We have used practical resources, number lines and games to help build confidence and deepen understanding.

English

In writing, the children have been working hard on composing simple sentences. We have been focusing on using capital letters at the beginning of sentences, full stops at the end and remembering to leave finger spaces between words. The children are also beginning to re-read their writing to check that it makes sense and that they have included the key features we have been learning about. We are very proud of the effort they are putting into their writing and the progress they are making.

Key Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2)

English

This half term, children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring persuasive writing through The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt. They have shown great enthusiasm when writing their own letters, confidently expressing their ideas and feelings, giving reasons for their opinions and using persuasive language to engage the reader. It has been wonderful to see their growing independence, alongside continued progress in spelling, handwriting, and accurate use of punctuation such as capital letters and full stops.

Learning Means The World

In LMTW, children have been inspired by learning about the life of Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman in modern times to qualify as a doctor. They have developed a strong understanding of what life was like in the 19th century and how society has changed. The children were particularly engaged when exploring the challenges Elizabeth faced and the determination she showed to achieve her goals. They have also enjoyed learning about the positive impact she made by opening a hospital for women and children and improving hygiene in healthcare.

RE

In RE, the children have been thoughtfully exploring the question: Why do many Christians meet together regularly and what do they do? With a focus on Easter, they have learnt about what happens during church services, including prayer, singing and Bible readings. The children have shown great curiosity when discussing why community and worship are important to Christians, and have enjoyed discovering how churches support others through a variety of activities and celebrations.

Lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3 & 4)

Enrichment experiences

What an exciting and hectic term which began with Year 3 poetry workshops and a performance in the Henley Youth Festival at the Kenton theatre. The children showed such courage to stand up and recite their work – well done!  We also had the Henley Youth Festival Circus Science Assembly and workshops where we learnt about balance, push, pull, forces and gravity, all with a circus performance theme!

We enjoyed our Roald Dahl themed World Book Day with dressing up, the golden tickets and workshops to make a dream jar, chocolate tasting and designing their own chocolate bar!

On Friday, we celebrated Red Nose Day - we all enjoyed the whole school dance party in the afternoon and look forward to the staff challenge to end the term.

Year 3

It was great for Year 3 to get out and do some fieldwork around Henley this term. Cowell class went on a walk to see the human and physical features of our local area - thank you so much to our lovely parent volunteers!

Year 4

Throughout this term, Year 4 have been focusing on their amazing production of Wind in The Willows. Well done to all our talented and enthusiastic actors who quickly learnt their words, songs and the stage directions.

Learning Means The World

Whilst all this has been happening, we continued the curriculum with a focus of Friendship in PSHE. We discussed what makes a good friend, is it good to have a best friend and what happens when we have fall-outs and ways to overcome our friendship issues.  We have enjoyed developing our map skills and exploring the Geography of the United Kingdom in LMTW.

Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5 & 6)

The second half of the Spring term has been fast and furious!

We began with our whole-phase trip to Ufton Court where we trained to be Roman soldiers, recreated famous battles and decided the fate of Roman criminals. It was an excellent way to consolidate our learning in the classroom and show off our great knowledge. Thank you again to our parent volunteers.

English

In English, we have been inspired by the life and work of David Attenborough. Using the book Little People Big Dreams: David Attenborough, we have learnt about the features of a biography as well as the global achievements of this remarkable person. We even recorded voice-over narrations of a nature film in the style of the great man himself! We are now in the process of finishing our writing of a biography of other famous scientists/presenters.

Maths

In Maths, all classes have continued to focus on working with fractions, decimals and percentages - these specific topics, along with the 4 operations, form a large part of the UKS2 curriculum. As Year 6 builds towards their SATs in May, they have been revisiting specific topics such as symmetry, reflection and translation; as well as using weekly arithmetic tests and the recent mock SATs to hone their skills and technique. Year 5 has been looking at perimeter and area.

Afternoon Lessons

After completing our Invaders and Settlers topic, we moved into the world of Go with the Flow - a science-based unit focused on the human body and how it works. The children brought in some truly brilliant photos of themselves and family members at various different stages of the human lifecycle to create amazing class timelines that now adorn our classrooms and provide much entertainment! We have also been investigating the effect of diet, exercise and substances on our health as well as ‘making’ blood and a model ‘heart’!

We have all very much enjoyed our Forest School sessions with Mrs Chilvers this term and once again thank the parents who have given up their time to support these.

PE

Our PE sessions with MNR have focused on learning and practicing the skills and rules needed for Netball - the children learnt quickly to understand the positions, footwork and offside rules and put them into match play situations.

Once we had completed our T1 Rugby training with Performances Sports we turned our attention to cricket - practicing catching, bowling and batting technique in preparation for the summer term.

Enrichment experiences

Year 5 attended their T1 rugby festival at Henley Hawks Rugby Club at the start of term and played brilliantly against other local schools. We were also able to take a squad of Year 5 netballers to Shiplake College to experience a netball tournament there.

Many children from across the school and this phase, enjoyed an excellent morning of cross country running at The Oratory School where several children picked up medals and certificates for participation.

World Book Day was another highlight of the term. It is always such a fun day watching the children come to school in their costumes and take part in the various activities - our Year 6 Reading Champions worked especially hard with Miss Newman to create a special day this year.

More recently, as part of the Henley Youth Festival, we watched an excellent performance by The Globe Players, giving us a whistle-stop tour of some of Shakespeare’s most famous plays and characters, as well as a history lesson!

With Red Nose Day, the Year 6 trip to be Junior Citizens in Oxford and Year 5 attending the matinee performance of Mary Poppins at Gillotts School, we are certainly ending the term with a flourish.

Sport

Cross Country

A large group of KS2 children went to The Oratory School on Tuesday 3rd March to represent Trinity in a schools' cross-country event.  We fielded a large and enthusiastic team in each of the four races and the children were wonderful ambassadors for the school.  They ran courageously and were complimented on their sportsmanship, which made us very proud!  As well as lots of excellent individual performances, Trinity achieved third place in both the Year 3/4 girls race and the Year 5/6 girls race.  Well done to all the children who took part!

Rugby

Year 5 began the term by putting their T1 Rugby skills to the test at the T1 Rugby Festival. The children had a fantastic time, showing great enthusiasm and engagement in all the activities, particularly enjoying the opportunity to take part in matches.

Netball

This term, UKS2 have been developing their netball skills. A team of nine pupils had the opportunity to represent the school at a Netball Tournament held at Shiplake College, competing against other schools. It was a fantastic day, and the team performed brilliantly, finishing second in their league.

Friends of Trinity School

Thanks to your amazing generosity of time, energy and support, FOTS raised over £10,000 in 2025! That funding helped FOTS contribute to a range of school initiatives, including finishing off the Year 1 & 2 area with a fantastic new play space and roof (keeping little ones dry and toys going for longer!).

This year, we’re turning things up another notch! As the school refreshes its vision and classroom environments, FOTS has pledged £20,000 to support these improvements – with Early Years already busy refreshing their space.  We’re also delighted to be boosting support for trips, Forest School, and of course keeping the magic alive with fun Christmas and Easter treats.

Upcoming fundraising events:

12 June: Trinity to Paris charity bike ride

On Friday, 12th June, 33 Trinity parents will be cycling from the school to Paris to raise money for Trinity, Gillotts and the Chiltern Centre. The event will start from the Trinity playground before riders cycle 140km to Newhaven, hopefully in time to catch the overnight ferry to Dieppe in France. Upon disembarking the ferry the following morning (and hopefully after a few hours sleep), the riders will then do another 190km ending under the Eiffel Tower.

Local businesses have been very generous in their sponsorship of this event, and we are very grateful for this. Individual riders have now started raising money.  If you would like to support the event, individual sponsorship links can be found here: https://www.friendsoftrinityschool.com/team

Thank you to all of our amazing cyclists. We’ll be cheering you on all the way!

Dates for the diary:

13 April: FOTS Extraordinary General Meeting

FOTS will be holding an EGM in the school Science Lab at 7:00pm on Monday, 13th April.  In addition to electing our new FOTS Chair, Secretary and Committee members (with thanks to all those who have put themselves forward for the various roles), FOTS will be discussing what they have planned for the coming year. All parents and carers are welcome.

16 April: FOTS Secondhand Uniform sale, timings to be confirmed

Our next secondhand uniform sale is scheduled to take place on Thursday 16th April. This is a great opportunity to plug any uniform gaps, especially if your child is doing forest school this term as PE kit is ideal. If you have any items to donate, please do so by 13th April.

Charity

Red Nose Day

This term, the School Council have been busy planning fun and meaningful ways to raise money for Red Nose Day. They decided on a ‘Red to Toe’ day to support the cause, alongside a 10-minute dance party where each class chose their favourite song, mixed with a few classic hits to enjoy together. To add to the excitement, the School Council introduced a final challenge: the Staff Challenge! They have set a fundraising target of £500, and if we reach this goal, a member of staff will take on a challenge chosen by the pupils.

Local Care Home

We also enjoyed another visit to Acacia Lodge Care Home, where Year 5 pupils, alongside Rev Sam Brewster, led a service and spent time chatting with the residents. It was a truly special experience, with both the children and residents thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to connect. We are proud to continue shining in service to our community.

Leonardo's sponsored walk for Amber

For his Gold Mayor of Henley award, Leonardo decided to raise money for Amber Andrews by walking 15km on 28th of February 2026, which was Rare Disease Day.  Amber is a friend of his sister (Isabella) and it is amazing to see how much she has improved over the years - she can now do over 10 steps by herself!

Thank you especially to all the donations from Trinity’s families, Leonardo raised £720. CLICK HERE for Leo's Just Giving page if you'd still like to support.

Trinity Church

As I write this little update, school play rehearsals are in full swing in the church. It’s a pleasure to be able to share our resources with the school for occasions like this. We’re planning a major project to redevelop our church building, which I hope will make this space even better for us all. Watch this space!

Assemblies Spotlight

We’ve been enjoying working through the Easter story with the help of an excellent Lego stop-motion animation. We’ve been seeing that Jesus is a very different kind of king, who gave his life for us, was rejected by everyone but trusted God’s plan, and when he died on the cross took the ‘red card’ we deserve, because of his great love.

Easter at Trinity Church

We’re looking forward to welcoming you to our school Easter service onThursday 26th March, from 10:30am. We also run a popular Easter Trail on Good Friday morning: chocolate eggs, characters from the Easter story, and tea and hot cross buns a plenty! We’d love to see you there. More information about this and our Easter services is all here.

A very happy Easter- and please reach out if I can help in any way.

Very best wishes, Rev Sam Brewster
