Autumn Term 2025
In our LMTW topic we have been learning about prejudice in the form of racism and sexism. On Friday, Mrs Danckert taught the children about the history of women in football and surprised them with some fascinating facts about how and why women started playing and how their game developed. We then went outside to take part in a very special practical session; wearing our favourite sports and football shirts, Mr and Mrs Nicholson (who are qualified coaches), came into school and ran a number of football-based activities designed to get the children thinking about discrimination, inclusion and teamwork. We finished by signing a class pledge to include people more. A huge thank you to them for organising such a great session.

On Friday, we took part in the FIRST EVER LIVE ASSEMBLY FROM ANTARCTICA! Along with 500 other schools in the world, we heard from Robert Swann OBE - famous polar explorer – and his team who are currently undertaking various scientific and conservation investigations in Antarctica. There was lots of great information for the children to learn and some fascinating facts to use in our next writing unit.

The Year 6 children did a fantastic job helping their EYFS buddies enjoy the FOTS Christmas Fayre - carrying toys and books, helping with the money and supporting them to play the various games. Thank you to all the parent helpers for another brilliant fayre for the children.

This week, it has been lovely to see the first wave of the 100 Things books coming in and talk to the children about some of the activities that they have been undertaking. In our current Learning Mean the World topic about Walter Tull, we have been looking at the issue of racism in sport and football in particular - the children designed some bold and brilliant posters in their lesson on Thursday after a lively debate.

On Friday 28th November, we welcomed PC Michael Dix from Thames Valley Police into school to talk to the year 5 and 6 children about a range of topics including bullying, social media and behaviour in the community and the laws around these. He reminded us that the age of criminal responsibility is 10 and highlighted a campaign called 'Stay True to You' that encourages young people to trust their instincts. The children had some excellent insights and questions and we very much appreciated PC Dix's time.

Rundell Class are very much enjoying learning about Walter Tull, the topic has covered learning about Barbados and Walter's parents, his difficult childhood in a London orphanage and his footballing talent. We are now at the part of his story where he joins the British Army in WW1 to become the first black serving officer.

On Friday 14th December, we had a busy day raising money for Children in Need in our PJs and raising awareness of Anti-bullying week by wearing odd-socks! Later on, we welcomed Captain Russ Danckert to school - as a serving member of the British Army, he gave the year 5 and 6 children a fascinating insight into his life and career in the armed forces, including some marching practise!

Using some basic sewing skills to attach the button and leaf, we created a really effective and poignant display of our work for Remembrance Day this week.

Pupils gather in Henley Marketplace to mark Remembrance Day

In Rundell Class we have been continuing our learning about Winston Churchill, this time as an artist and replicating some of his 500 paintings to make our own gallery. In D.T, we have designed and sewn felt poppies to mark Remembrance Day - cutting the felt, sewing the buttons and leaf to then present them on a black and white photo of our own hands, they look stunning.

We have made a great start to our new topic - British Bulldog, The Story of Winston Churchill - some lovely topic cover pages here to kick of our detailed research.

Rundell Class have been busy designing, constructing and testing sundials this week as we come towards the end of our current Mission Control space-themed work. The children produced some really creative and colourful designs. We also performed our whole-class poem for this week's Harvest Festival - all the readers and the ensemble did a fantastic job!

This week we have really started to go deep into our space topic 'Mission Control' - the children have brought in some great books, done some research at home and even baked some space-themed cupcakes. In this photo you can also see the models we made to show the orbits of the Earth and the Moon.
As we start off the school year, we have been thinking hard about what makes a good friend and who are the people that we trust to help and support us.
