Zephaniah - Yrs 5&6

Welcome to the Zephaniah class page. Below you will find details of what the children have been learning and doing at school. Please click on the link to the right of this page for homework.

Spring 2026

Year 6 travelled to Oxford's Rewley Road Fire Station to attend the Junior Citizen workshop. Across a number of different scenarios, the children learnt about various hazards and risks that they may encounter as they grow up and move to a more independent phase of their lives and education. The children all practised making a 999 emergency call, put each other into the recovery position and learnt how to respond to incidents at the beach, at the river, in a home, at a train station and on the road. Delivered by members of the Fire & Rescue and Police Services, we certainly learnt a lot of really important information and what we can do to stay safe and help others. A huge thank you to the parent volunteers who came with us.  To see all of the photos of the trip CLICK HERE.

Zephaniah class have been enjoying Forest School this term.

In science lessons this term the children have been learning about human biology, looking at the effect of exercise on heart rate. For this we conducted an experiment where we measured our pulse rates after different activities.

Zephaniah have enjoyed learning netball with MNR in our PE sessions. Our lessons have focused on learning and practicing the skills and rules needed for Netball - the children learnt quickly to understand the positions, footwork and offside rules and put them into match situations.

Once we had completed our T1 Rugby training with Performances Sports we turned our attention to cricket - practicing catching, bowling and batting techniques in preparation for the summer term.

We enjoyed celebrating World Book Day.

As part of the Henley Youth Festival, UKS2 watched an excellent performance by The Globe Players, giving us a whistle-stop tour of some of Shakespeare’s most famous plays and characters as well as a history lesson!

UKS2 had a fantastic day at Ufton Court after the recent half term break, not only did we re-enact Boudica's revolt, we trained to be Roman soldiers and experienced the Roman justice system. The weather held for us and the children were great at getting involved.

Our new PE with MNR focuses on Sports Leaders, and has been a great success so far. The children have really been enjoying learning how to lead activities, work as a team, and support others while developing their confidence and communication skills.

This term we’ve shown so much enthusiasm in our afternoon lessons, learning about the invasions of the Roman Empire, looking at timelines, making fact-files on Emperors, watching documentaries and deciding why invasions happen. The children have been making Roman shields and we are hoping for some outdoor re-enactments once the weather looks better!

We have had a great start to the new year in Zephaniah class! We started by thinking about our goals and what we are good at / what we want to improve on, and then shared these with the class.

Autumn Term 2025

On Friday 28th November, we welcomed PC Michael Dix from Thames Valley Police into school to talk to the year 5 and 6 children about a range of topics including bullying, social media and behaviour in the community and the laws around these. He reminded us that the age of criminal responsibility is 10 and highlighted a campaign called 'Stay True to You' that encourages young people to trust their instincts. The children had some excellent insights and questions and we very much appreciated PC Dix's time.

Using some basic sewing skills to attach the button and leaf, we created a really effective and poignant display of our work for Remembrance Day this week.

In our afternoon lessons the children gave inspiring speeches inspired by Winston Churchill, practising their public speaking and learning about his famous leadership during World War II. They spoke with great confidence and expression — a wonderful way to bring history to life!

In PE, the children enjoyed playing kabaddi, showing fantastic teamwork, energy, and enthusiasm. It was brilliant to see everyone joining in and encouraging one another. We finished our PE unit with a tournament which the children enjoyed.

As part of our Writing topic, the children learned about Scott’s journey to Antarctica. They felt how cold it would have been by holding bags of ice and even tried tying shoelaces while wearing thick gloves — discovering just how tricky life in the freezing conditions would have been!

Here are some examples of work we've been doing in class:

We've had such a fantastic term so far in Zephaniah class. It has been so lovely seeing the children work together and getting along nicely. At the start, we enjoyed getting to know each other, making our class display and thinking about the qualities of a good friend.

In LMTW, we launched our 'Mission Control' topic where the children became human models of the Earth, Sun and Moon, acting out their orbits. In PE, they’ve learned the basics of Kabaddi, as well as performing different dance actions in groups. We’ve also now finished part one of our English text, Cosmic, where children wrote what they predicted happened next, and now we are just starting our part 2 - writing a news article!

We’ve also had some fantastic homework in, including an impressive scratch project diary on all the planets, as well as some very tasty baking!
