Autumn Term 2025

The children had a fantastic time at Twiggy Wednesday this week! After all the recent rain, the outdoor area was full of mud – glorious mud! The children strengthened their gross-motor skills by sliding down the hill and climbing back up again, all while laughing and enjoying the challenge. They also loved digging, exploring the soft earth, and shaping their very own mud balls. In addition to the muddy fun, the children created beautiful poppies for Remembrance Week.

In Jeffers this week, the children have been exploring and sorting 2D shapes in lots of fun and hands-on ways. They have been learning to name and describe circles and triangles, and talking about their sides and corners. Through sorting activities, games, and creative challenges, the children are developing their early maths and problem-solving skills while noticing shapes all around them in the classroom and outdoor environment.

This week in Twiggy Wednesday, the children have been learning all about Bonfire Night and the traditions that make it such a special celebration. Through exciting, hands-on activities, they explored the sights and sounds of fireworks and learned about how to enjoy them safely. Using natural materials, the children created their own woodland sparklers and miniature fireworks,  crafting colourful bursts and sparkly designs from sticks and leaves.

This week, Jeffers have taken exciting steps in their early reading journey by learning to read CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words such as catdogsun, and hat. They've been blending sounds together and growing in confidence every day. We're so proud of their progress!

We also had a fantastic time exploring pumpkins! The children got hands-on with scooping, touching, and even smelling the insides of real pumpkins. We talked about their textures, sizes, and colours, and counted the seeds.

This week in Jeffers, we’ve been using the natural materials of autumn to support and inspire our learning across the curriculum. The children have absolutely loved exploring the rich textures, colours, and shapes that this season brings. After gathering autumn treasures from our outdoor walks – including leaves, acorns, conkers, and pinecones – we brought them into the classroom to use in creative and hands-on ways.

Here’s how we’ve been using these materials in our learning:

  • Leaf printing and rubbing – exploring texture and pattern while developing fine motor skills and learning about symmetry and shape.
  • Acorn and conker counting – supporting early maths skills through sorting, matching, and creating patterns.
  • Seasonal art and collage – using autumn colours and materials to create individual and group artwork inspired by what we’ve seen outdoors.

It’s been a wonderful week of learning through nature.

This week the children have been exploring all things relating to Autumn! They went on a leaf hunt around the school, did leaf rubbings and leaf collages. In the classroom, we have set up a Autumn cafe role play area and a campfire role play for the children to enjoy. They have also explored autumn small world role play with puppets.

This week we have been looking at sorting objects into different groups based on colour, shape and size. The children were given different criteria to sort the objects and then independently decided on their own criteria for sorting.
